I took second at USATF Nationals Cross-Country when I was ten. I was 6th at nationals in the 3000 in 2004.

Personal:

I did lots of competitive running growing up. I'm now 23 and have fibromyalgia and CFS. I just finished nursing school and am going back for my MSN in a few months, but I want to get back in shape and be able to run again.

After taking almost 3 weeks off, I'm finally able to start running and getting back into shape. About 4 weeks ago I got strep throat and didn't have quality runs for about a week. Then I ran P.F. Changs half. I got croup the day before the race, and as soon as I was over that I got my wisdom teeth out. There are a few things I would like to do to get in shape. I want to get stronger by cross training, I want to get my splits back (I used to be a very flexible gymnast), and I want to improve my diet.

Today I ran from my house to the gym which was 3.5 miles, once I was at the gym I ran a half mile on the treadmill to make it an even 4, then I did weights for 20 minutes and stretched for 15 minutes.

This morning I took a pilates class at the gym before school, it was fun and different I think i'm going to start doing pilates and yoga to improve strength and flexibility.

Today we had practice, we ran from the school to 2100 s. on 1300 e. then we turned and went to 2100 s. and 900 e. Then we took 900 e. to 900 s. and then ran back up to the school and did a loop around the school. It was a tough workout, especially the hill at the end, but I really liked the route we took it was a fun run. My left knee hurts a little bit but only if I think about it. After I stretched for about 10 minutes.

Wow, I am so out of shape! I had a track workout today. I did a mile warm-up a mile of speed changes, and then for the workout. I did a mile (6:34) then 3x400 I was supposed to do 6 but decided 3 was plenty since I'm just starting back up. They ranged from 1:20-1:30. It was a good workout, my knee was still hurting, and my mouth still hurts when I run. Afterwards I stretched for about 5 minutes.

Hey, you haven't blogged in a while - welcome back...? I got my wisdom teeth out a month ago, it is quite the experience - were yours hard to get out? Hope you can get back into running after having to take time off for a while.

I had a really bad experience with it. My cheeks were huge, and I had dry socket in two of the teeth. All 4 were impacted. I couldnt get out of bed for a week. It sucked!

Today I had work at 5 and got out of school at 2, so I didn't have much time to run. I left as soon as school got out and ran from the school to 1700 s. on 1300 e. Then went to 500 s. and back to the school. I did a lap around the school to make it closer to 4. It felt ok. The wind on the way back wasn't very fun, but it was good to practice running in the wind. Knee still hurts.

Today I did the same run I did monday but we did it backwards. I prefer going this way, it makes the hill much more gradual. It was probably the best run I've had since I started back up, it was still hard though. I know I just have to be patient and I'll get back in shape eventually. My knee is still hurting. During the run it snowed on us a little bit but not much at all. After the run I stretched for about 5 to 10 minutes.

I warmed up just over a mile. Then I ran the race. My time was 44:51. I was happy with the race. I took it easy in the first half and then tried to pick it up a little bit in the second half. This is the longest run I've done in the past month so that was good. After the race I cooled down 3 miles. I felt fine but my calves are sore.

I warmed up by doing 4 laps of speed changes and 5 laps slow at the oval. Then I did 10x400. My fastest was a 1:17 and my slowest was a 1:24. Then I did 4 laps slow for a cool down. On my last 400 my foot fell asleep half way in. It was the weirdest thing, and it's never happened to me before but its happened to my dad a few times. I think my toes were just tied to tight. It was a good workout. I was happy with it.

We did two loops around the inside of the park, then went out for the loop that salt lake track club runs, I decided not to go in the cemetary becasue I only needed 6 but was getting 8 anyways. Today was state, I ran in the two mile. I ran a 12:55. My leg didn't hurt at all during the race. I thought it was better but it hurts a little bit tonight so it probably needs a little more rest. I was happy with my race because I ran faster than I did at region and I broke 13 which I only did once as a freshman. I can't feel bad about my race considering my compression fracture and the fact that I haven't trained in 7 weeks. Now I can't wait for it to get better so I can get back in shape. If it doesn't hurt this week and I'm able to run, I think I will run magna, but I'll just have to wait and see.

Nice race. But any race 5k and under should count towards VO2max miles. VO2max is when you are at or very near 100% max heart rate. Threshold pace is the pace that you should be able to race for about 1 hour. Good luck with your injury.

It's frustrating because my legs feel good so I want to push, but I can't because I'm so out of shape. I would like to get at least 25 miles this week and then gradually build from there. It took us 36:53 so 9:15 pace. My leg still hurts a little. It's at a point where I don't know how hard I can push it, it should be healed because it's been 10 weeks. I can't tell if the muscles in the area are just sore or if it's still the bone i can feel, and I don't want to run to hard and make it worse.

Today I went for a run with my dad and brother. My dad told us we should run on this great trail he had found on his long run a few days earlier. Once we got started, he began telling us about this trail, and how there was rattlesnake warnings, lizards everywhere, bushes that were like cactuses and had grown into the trail, and how the trail was barely even wide enough for one person. Once we got onto the trail me and my brother decided that it wasn't a trail and that if it was noone had used it in about ten years. While we were running on some parts of the "trail" we had to hold our hands straight up and be as skinny as possible so the cactus bushes didn't hurt so much, but eventually we made it to the end of the "trail". We finished at the ocean which was nice. The ocean was really pretty. I got six miles. My leg still hurt but it hurts the same every day it isn't getting better or worse. (Pegasus 35)

Today was my very first speed workout in like 12 weeks! I did a lap around sugar house park slow to warmup, then I did 3 laps of speed changes and 1 lap slow. Then  the workout was 1x800, 2x400, 5x200. These were my times:

800: 2:59-changed from trainers to flats and jogged one lap

400:1:21-my leg hurt a little bit after this one and I was going to stop but I really really wanted to finish the workout so I decided to slow down a little bit on the next one and see how it felt. Jogged one lap

400: 1:22- It felt like I slowed down but obviously I didn't. Jogged one lap

200: 39 finished the lap

200: 40 finished the lap

200: 38 finished the lap

200: 39 finished the lap

200: 36 finished the lap

Then we jogged two laps slow at the track. Then McKenzie and Sussanah did some hurdle stuff to practice for steeplechase. I was going to but my leg was hurting a little and I didn't want to push it any harder. After they were done we jogged in the park for 8 minutes really slow. I counted it as a 1/2 mile even though it was probably more. Pulse was 66 this morning. (Pegasus 63)

I was stiff again I think it's just because I'm still getting back in shape. I'll probably go for another run tonight just 3 or 4 miles. (Pegasus 75)

PM- Tonight I went for a run alone at sugarhouse park. I just did two laps around the perimeter. It was 4 miles. It took me 31:03, so about 7:45 pace. My legs felt really good but my bunion started hurting after the first lap. I'm anxious to run Heart of Holladay. Hopefully it can give me a good idea of where I am. (Pegasus 79)

Today I ran Heart of Holladay. I did a warm up from my house to the starting line which is just over two miles. Right when I started the warm up I could feel that my legs were tired. I ran the race and I was pushing the whole time. I ran a 6:26, 6:38, 7:05, and the last .1 was 39. At about mile one I could hear Demetrio behind me and I didn't want him to beat me so it was good motivation to push. My total time was a 20:51. I was happy with the race hopefully I can run faster at murray. I just went back and looked at my time from last year which was a 22:18 so I ran about 1:40 faster than that, which is really encouraging. (Pegasus 81)

Tonight was very interesting! I had dinner around 8:30 we ate shrimp. Then we went to a wedding at 9:30, and when we got back from the wedding I decided I needed to go running because I didn't have my 40 miles for the week. My dad drove me over to a park by my house and we started to run. About a mile and a half into the run my face started itching really bad. The next time we ran past the car I told my dad I was going to stop and get some water, and look in the mirror because my lip felt swollen. When I stopped I had hives all over and my face was swelling up really bad. My dad finished running and then we went to pick my mom and brothers up from the house and then we went to the hospital. It turns out I'm allergic to shell fish, so that kind of sucks, and I didn't finsh my run so I'm short for the week but oh well.

I'm doing much better tonight and there's hardly any more swelling so that is good. I'd like to hit 2 weeks of 40 and then build up a little more, but I'll just take it day by day and see how things go. My legs were a little tired last week but I expected that. Also the doctors put me on Prednisone for the allergic reaction I had so maybe that can clear up some little aches and pains too. I also just found out I will probably be running wasatch back this weekend so that will be fun. (Pegasus 88)

Me and my dad went for a run just before 10 tonight. We were running at sugar house park. We did two loops around the perimeter. I twisted each ankle pretty hard because it was so dark, so we decided to do the last two on the road. We did a loop out on 1500 e. to garfield. Then up garfield to 1700 e. Then 1700 e. north 3 streets. Then back down to 1500 e. and back to the park. Our time was 49:04. It was a good run. My time wasn't that fast but it felt like I ran a good pace and opened my stride a little bit. (Pegasus 94)

Today we did a speed workout at the track. We did a loop around the park for our warm-up. Then we did 3 laps of speed changes and 1 lap slow. Then our workout was 5 sets of 400, 200, 100. We jogged one lap after the 400, and finished the lap on the 200 and 100. These were my times:

400:1:23

200: 38

100: 17

400: 1:19

200: 37

100: 18

400: 1:17

200: 37

100: 18

400: 1:17

200: 36

100: 17

400: 1:18

200: 36

100: 16

After the first 400, my nose started to bleed. It kept bleeding till the end of the second set. It was really hard to run and attempt to not get blood everywhere. I wasn't very successful. For my cooldown I jogged around the inside of the park which was a mile and a half. My leg hurt a little bit today but I think that was because I walked 3 miles earlier today and it normally hurts if I stand or walk for a long time. I was only planning on hitting 40 this week, but it looks like it might end up being 45. We start team workouts tomorrow morning so that will be fun. (Pegasus 97)

That was so sad when your nose was bleeding. It seemed that it went on forever. But at least it stopped.

Today we had our first team practice. We did a warm-up lap around the perimeter of Sugar House Park. Then we did 5 strides. Then we did some drills. I'm a little bit sore from some of the drills. Then we did 3x25 crunches, 3x15 push-ups. Then we jogged around the inside of the park slowly for a cooldown. After me, susannah, and amanda sat in the river for a little bit. (Pegasus 101)

It took me 49:06. I am sore and tired but I felt good and was able to pick it up towards the end. After the run we did 3x25 crunches, and 3x15 push-ups. Tomorrow is Wasatch Back so that will be lots of fun, but I still don't know which legs I am running. Hopefully I find out soon. (Pegasus 107)

I could've done much better on that run if I hadn't slept funny... at least for the time I was asleep. The anticipation of an alarm clock going off keeps me up. After practice I slept until 12:30.

Today was Wasatch Back. Our team started at 4:00. I was on team Full Nelson. I was running leg 12. It was 3.1 miles and it was a pretty steep incline up to snow basin. I started around 10:30. It took me 27:10. My calves were cramping by the end. I passed 4 people and got passed by one. It was dark out so I couldn't see much. It was starting to get cold so I wore a long sleeve but I got hot along the way. I guess it wasn't really that cold.

After we had all ran the first leg we tried to get some food at the lodge at snow basin, but they had closed just as we got there, so we then drove to east canyon and had some pasta. Then we "slept" in the car for about an hour till it was time for our van to start running again. I was able to sort of sleep till my leg which I started around 5:15 I think. This leg was 5.2 miles. It was a nice gradual up to the dam, and from there it was gradual ups and downs to the end of the leg. I didn't feel like I was able to open up on this leg. I was still pretty full from the pasta so that could have been part of it. My time was 37:19. I think I passed about 12 people on this leg. After I finished my leg I fell asleep in the car and didn't wake up till our van had started going again. My last leg was fun, but it was really hot. It was 5 miles, and it took me 34:37. I think I passed 15 people on this leg. My legs were starting to feel really tired and heavy by the end and the heat wasn't helping, luckily there were some waters on one of the fences along the trail and some of the people standing by it said I could have some. Overall it was a really fun race, but now I'm very tired. I ended up getting 42.5 miles this week. I only wanted 40, but I guess 2.5 extra is ok. I'll shoot for 40 again this week and then maybe jump up to 45 or 50 after that.

This morning when I woke up I was pretty sore. I decided to go with my parents up to Jeremy Ranch Rd. and run. I just went for an easy 4 miles. We didn't get started till about 11 so it was really hot. I took it easy and stopped in the shade a few times to stretch. My time was 37:03, so 9:15 pace. It was sort of weird. When I started running my legs started itching like crazy, about three quarters of a mile in I stopped to scratch them and they were fine after that. That's never happened to me before. It was just over 7 miles. It took me 1:05:38. It was a really hard run with lots of uphill. I'm still sore from wasatch back so running downhill just hurt. Me and Susannah ran together most of the time. It was pretty hot out too, but other than that it was a good run. (pegasus 118)

AM- This morning we did a loop around the park for the warm up. Then when we got back we did basically the same workout she does here but not the hurdle part.  http://track.flocasts.org/videos/series/view_video/249-workout-wednesday/64864-episode-7-shalane-f  Then we did a 3x25 crunches and 3x15 pushups and a 2 mile cooldown. After watching this clip I was amazed at how hard she worked and it helps me realize there are lots of other things I can be doing to get better. The circuit was really hard for me obviously I need to work on more anaerobic threshold stuff.

PM- We did a loop around sugar house park for the warm-up. Then we did 3 laps of speed changes and one lap slow. Then we did 3x800. My times were:

1- 2:58

2- 2:53

3- 2:52

We jogged one lap in between each one. They felt really good. My legs started to feel it on the last one. Then we jogged in the park for a little over ten minutes for a cooldown. I'm way ahead for my miles this week. I'll try to take it easy but I will probably hit at least 45 maybe 50. (Pegasus 128)

I jogged about a mile before the race with a few strides. It was a very flat course. Me and Susannah were together for about half of the race, but then one of the streets we turned onto had a slight uphill and Susannah pulled about twenty meters ahead of me. I should have fought to stay with her harder, but I didn't. Other than that it was a good race. My time was 20:47. The course was about 100 meters long so that would make my time about 20 seconds faster. In the drawing I won a bike so that was pretty cool.

Where on the shin? Your mileage increases have been very aggressive since recovering from your stress fracture, I would have some concern of developing another one in your Tibia. Ibuprofen in known to block the absorption of calcium into the bones and prevent bone growth. It is not given to patients who have bone grafts for that reason. I hope you heal soon!

From Breanna on Mon, Jun 30, 2008 at 08:38:12

It hurts on both sides along the bone, Since my stress fracture though I have increased my calcium intake, cut out all cafiene, and reduced how much ibuprophen i take(800 mg 1xday as opposed to 2-3xday). I'm pretty sure that it is muscle,I think I hurt it about 3 weeks ago when I was doing speed work. I was on prednisone for an allergic reaction I had and probably pushed the workout harder than I should have.

From fan!! on Mon, Jun 30, 2008 at 11:56:22

have you had a bone scan? You need to make sure that you don't have something go on or you may end up with a permanent injury!!!! Paim is our bodies way of telling us we need to stop!!

From Breanna on Mon, Jun 30, 2008 at 14:45:26

I haven't had a bone scan, but It doesn't hurt that bad, so I doubt it is bone. It hasn't been getting worse and seems to be getting a little bit better each day. I'm guessing it's just some shin splints, but I'll keep watching it and if it starts getting worse, I'll back off.

From Maria on Mon, Jun 30, 2008 at 14:57:50

I would not do any more speedwork until the shin stops hurting. In fact, I would not do any speedwork, period, so early in your comeback! What's the rush? Build up slowly, and you'll be ready for x-c season. What is the purpose of speedwork now, anyway? Hope you feel better soon!

AM- This morning we met at liberty park. Collin said he was coming but wasn't there and since he lived really close to the park we decided to jog to his house and wake him up. After that we started the workout. We were supposed to do 4 laps each lap getting 15 seconds faster. Me and Susannah ran together. The first lap was really slow, too slow. It was a 13:22. The next lap we had trouble only speeding up 15 seconds and our time was 12:55. Then we ran a 12:41. The last lap we just opened up and didn't worry about time. It felt really good and was an 11:25. The overall time for the workout was 54:54 for 6 and a half miles. So it was 8:26 pace which isn't too bad. Tonight we have speed work. So that should be good. Hopefully as I get in shape it will feel easier. Then we jogged one lap and did 10x200 with 100 meter jogging in between as recovery. These are my times for those:

1- 42

2- 43

3- 41

4- 41

5- 41

6- 41

7- 42

8- 41

9- 40

10- 38

I ran them with Carol. My legs were tired and felt a bit slugish today. I didn't think I was going to be able to make all ten at that pace, so I was really glad when I did. After that we did a lap around the park for the cooldown. (Pegasus 251)

Today I had a great race! I ran a 19:49, which is over a minute faster than Murray. My first mile was a 6:12, then a 6:16, and then a 6:43. The last tenth was a 37. My last mile was too slow. It was uphill but not that much so I'll have to work on that. I'm excited to have run under 20 again hopefully I can continue to improve.

This morning we got to the start at about 5:20. I walked up to the start line and did a little bit of jogging. Then I did some strides. The race was a little late, so I had some time to do some extra warm-up. I was able to start right on the line. I had a good start. My plan for the race was to run 6:15-6:20's for the first 3 miles and then just do whatever I could for the rest of the race. The first mile everyone went out hard. Me and Zak Erickson were together through this mile.  We were close to eachother in the race at Draper, so I figured I was at a good pace. When I came to the first split It turned out I had ran a 5:39. At first I was thinking wow, that was way too fast! But my legs felt fine so I decided to keep pushing. The next mile was a little harder because there was much less downhill, and gradual uphill before the mark. My split for this mile was a 5:45. It sort of worried me to see another split so fast, but I was still feeling good so I didn't worry too much. I was also glad to be pretty consistent in pace. The next mile was a bit harder. It had some steeper downhill as well as uphill. It didn't feel like I was really able to open up on the steep downhill just before 100 s. The uphill didn't feel too bad, and my legs still weren't hurting. My split at the 3 mile time was 6:24, so My 3 mile total was a 17:49. I'm guessing this put me somewhere around 18:30 at the 5k, and my PR in a 5k is 18:59 so that was encouraging. Right after this mark my legs are starting to feel it. My body realizes this isn't a 5k and I was only half way done. I started hurting but I just kept telling myself that I had the endurance and strength, so my legs would get me there I just had to keep pushing and keep hurting. My next split was a 6:15. I was surprised that it was this fast, because it felt like I had really slowed down. This was encouraging and helped me to push a little bit more. There were also a few people ahead of me that I was closing on and this pushed me too. The next mile was a 6:24. I was really hurting by this point, and I was counting down the blocks. I'm not sure if this made it go by faster or slower, but when ever I start to hurt I count down in meters, block, or minutes. If it's really bad sometimes in steps. I think it sort of puts it into a different prespective of how much longer I have to hurt, and breaks it up into sections. The last mile was a 6:52. This didn't feel too bad. I had ran it earlier in the week so I was prepared for it. By that point I had given everything and was just doing my best to get to the finish. The last .2 was 1:25. I didn't have any kick left in me. I was passed by 2 people right at the finish. My kick is something I will have to work on, but for now I was really happy with the race. My overall time was a 38:48. My goal was to break 40, so I did that and was really excited about it. A few things that I was happy about my race were that I kept pushing/hurting the whole time. I've been having a problem with getting into a comfort zone and not pushing out of it. Also I trusted myself more in this race which was important. Alot of races I'll start out at a pace I know I can hold, but I never try to go faster than that because I'm afraid I will die. Today I went out hard and trusted my legs enough not to back off. After the race I went and cheered for my dad on the Marathon. Then I jogged a lap around the park with Carre, for a cooldown.

AM- This morning I slept in and didn't get to the park till 1:00, so I did my run in 103 degree weather. It was awful. I went 6 miles. I did 2 laps around sugarhouse park, and then jogged up and down the river for the last 2 miles hoping it would be cooler there. It took me 50:00. I'm a little sore from yesterday, but not too bad.

PM- Tonight I was having a sleep over with a friend, but since I still needed some more miles. I ran to the ice cream shop 4 miles from my house and we met up there. I pushed the last two miles and my time ended up being 30:40. It was a good run. My leg hurts a little but it should be ok in a few days.

This morning I started my run early so that I could be done before my friend woke up. I went for 6 miles, then Carre, Zuzana, Emily, and Bethany met me and we went for another 6. Me and Carre just took it easy while the others pushed ahead. After the 12 miles I decided to stop and I would just do 2 miles tonight to get my mileage in but then I realized I only needed one more mile so me and Carre jogged the last mile. I took it easy today, my leg started hurting at about 8 miles, but not too bad. My time was 1:49:11 so 8:23 pace. Overall it was a good run, but it did get hot by the end. (Pegasus 308)

AM- This morning I ran the Minute Man 5k. I warmed up with Kiley about a mile. Then we started the race. I wanted to break 19. I knew that would be a huge improvement and a hard goal to reach but I decided to try anyway. My first mile was a 6:03. Me and Susannah were together at this point. When we turned to go on the downhill Susannah pulled about 10 meters ahead of me. She stayed that way and stretched the gap further and further the rest of the race. My second mile was a 6:16. I thought this was interesting because at Draper Days I also ran a 6:16 the second mile. My last mile was way too slow again. A 6:57, and then the last tenth was a 39. My total time was 19:58. I was 9 seconds slower than Draper Days. I think part of it was the heat, and I also wasn't in much of a racing mood. I need to work on that. After the race I did a 5 mile cooldown with Kiley, and some boys on the team.

PM- Tonight I went for an easy 4 miles with my Dad on the Jordan River Trail. It felt a little forced. I think I'm just tired. My time was 32:16 so just over 8 minute pace. I hit 50 for the week, so that was good! (Pegasus 350)

AM- This morning we ran on the trail from the zoo up to red butte and back. It felt good, it was pretty easy. Our time was 54:52, we came back 3 minutes faster than we went out so that was good. Me, Susannah, and Mary ran together.

PM- Tonight we did a lap around sugar House park for a warm-up, then we did 3 laps of speed changes and 1 lap slow. Then we did a mile. I was supposed to shoot for 6 minutes I was pretty close, but a little slow. I ran a 6:03, these were my splits: 1:32, 1:31, 1:30, 1:28. Then we did 3 more laps of speed changes and 1 lap slow. Tonight I ran 6 miles at the Jordan River with my dad. Then we saw Demetrio and joined him for about a mile and a half. It was a good easy run. We ran it in about 50 minutes (It was just over 6). I was tired from the 10 mile hike we did as a xc team that morning.

AM- This morning we met at Liberty park. I was a little sore from the hike yesterday. We did 1 lap warm-up, then we did 2 laps of fireman. The group I was in had to hit 21:15 for the 3 miles, but we ended up hitting 20:50 so that was good. It was hard for me but I think I'm just tired. Then we did 1 lap cooldown.

PM- Ran 6 miles on the Jordan River Trail with my dad again. We took it easy. I ate dinner right before and by mile 2 felt pretty sick. Our time was 51:07.

This morning we didn't have XC practice so I ran at sugar house park. Just as I was getting there I saw Susannah and Amanda. Amanda was just heading home, but Susannah was doing a few more laps so I joined her. We did 2 laps then ran to her house. On the way to her house we saw her brother Clayton starting his run. At Susannah's house I got some water and then ran back to the park and did a lap on the road to make it an even 8. My shin is really hurting so I'll have to ice it more and I'm going to take some ibuprophen to see if that helps. Hopefully it won't bother me in the 1/2 tomorrow. My time for the 8 miles was 1:05:13, so just under 8:10 pace. (Pegasus 78)

This morning I was up at 3:30 to head to the start line. I slept most of the way up there but I still didn't sleep much. At the start line I didn't do any warm-up because there were too many people and I couldn't see a good spot to do one. I started the race and just ran off of feel. These were my splits:

1-6:43

2- 6:48

3- 6:42

4- 6:41

5- 6:26

6- 6:24

7- 6:23

8- 6:34

9- 6:44

10- 6:48

11- 6:56

12- 7:26

13- 6:24

.1- 37

I took a Gu just before mile 6. I didn't really feel like taking it, but I was glad I did because at about 10 and a 1/2 my legs started to feel really heavy. Overall it was a good race. I was happy with my time, my fastest 1/2 in a while. My legs felt pretty good through out the race with a few aches here and there but my shin didn't bother me at all. After the race I jogged 2 miles, one with my mom while she finished, and one with Sasha. (Pegasus 80)

This morning we had our last summer workout. We met at the track. We did 1 mile slow, then a mile of speed changes and 1 lap slow. Then we did 1 mile and 2 800's. I was still very sore from the 1/2 so I did it at tempo pace. I did the mile in 6:43, and the 800's in 3:19 and 3:16. They felt fairly easy but my legs were tired and my calves were knotted up. Afterward we did a cooldown around the block that was 3.25 miles. We have our first meet on Wednesday so I hope my legs will be feeling better by then. (Pegaus 86)

PM- Since my shins have been hurting I decided to try a different pair of shoes. It seemed to work. I'll have to try them again and see. We ran from the track up to the drinking fountain at Shriners and back. When we got back we did 10x100 meter strides and 2x300. My 300's were in 53, then 51. Today we had our first XC meet. It was at wheeler farm. We started out by doing a warm-up. We jogged part of the course, but when we came to a spot on the course with a foot of water we decided the course needed to be changed. Once all of that was figured out we did some strides and started the race. The race went well. Me and Susannah ran together the first mile we hit a 6:10, then I pushed a little bit and was able to get a lead. After that I was just working my hardest to maintain. From the mile to the finish was 12:43, the course was 2.93 miles. I figure if it would have been three miles I would have run around a 19:32 so that's pretty good. After the race we did 10 hills and a 15 minute cooldown. My shins didn't hurt. I took ibuprophen, and put some biofreeze on them so that's probably why. (Skylon 9)

Today we ran to the Gully from the school through it and back. That was 2.75 miles. Then we did 1 mile of speed changes and 1 lap slow. Then we did an 800. I was supposed to run a 2:55. I ran a 2:56 so that was good we jogged one lap. Then we were doing 8x400, jogging 1 lap in between. I did the first one and decided I was too sore to finish the workout without pulling something, but after the team had done another 400, I decided to jump back in and try to finish the workout. I did and these were my splits:

1- 1:24

2- 1:22

3- 1:25

4- 1:22

5- 1:24

6- 1:26

7- 1:24

AM- This morning while we were in Midway I ran 6 miles. I did the cooldown with my dad. My shin was hurting pretty bad so it took me a while to convince myself to even start the run. Once I started it warmed up a little bit but then hurt the rest of the run.

PM- 7 miles at Liberty park tonight. My shin hurt even worse tonight. We started with a lap on the grass but I think because of it being uneven it made it hurt more, so we went on the roads for about 4 miles. At one point we stopped at a light which made it hurt way worse once I started again. I looked back through my blog and its been hurting for 10 weeks. I don't know what I should do. I'm going to back off a bit next week and hopefully that will help it. I don't want to stop running because I don't want to loose my fitness. (Skylon 46)

Breanna!!! Go get an xray ASAP. You need to make sure you are not having a stress reaction, or you will be out of running much longer. Running through this kind of pain is not good. You can always do pool running which will allow you to maintain your aerobic fitness, but if you let this go it will not get better. Please listen.

AM- Ran from the school down to liberty park. Did 10x1 minute fartlek. Then we finished the lap and jogged back up to the track. It was 5 miles.

PM- Ran from the track through the U campus up to shriners hospital and then back. It was also 5 miles for the day, so a total of 10. I got some new shoes that help with pronation. I think I am pronating and that is why my shin is hurting based on where the pain is. The shoes seem to help. With the new shoes it is much more manegable. (Evolution 10)

I started passing people towards the end of the first lap and start of the second lap. I kept passing people but when I was almost to the third lap I was in between groups which made it harder to motivate myself. I think I slowed down from there, because girls started to pass me especially the last time on the track. I had 4 girls out kick me so I really need to work on my kick. My time was a 21:38 and I was 27th. The course was long and I figured if it would have been accurate I would have ran about a 19:40 so that was good but I still think I could have done better. AM- This morning we did the VA loop, then we did 10x100 meter strides and a mile cooldown on the track. It was a good workout the strides felt really good. It rained on us during the VA loop pretty hard but was ok after that.

PM- Tonight we did just over a mile and a half warm up around the block with our school. We had a fitness challenge thing today as a school. After that we did the workout. We did 10x400. We were in groups of 2 and while one person ran we got to recover and we just switched off each lap. My partner was doing her 400's faster than me so I was getting less than equal recovery. These were my splits:

1-1:19

2-1:22

3- 1:21

4-1:22

5-1:23

6-1:24

7-1:24

It was a good workout and at the end of each interval I was surprised by my times. My legs were really starting to feel it after about the 4th one. Afterwards we jogged a mile cooldown. AM-This morning I went on a shake out run before our race this afternoon. I ran about 2 and a half miles and threw in a few strides as well. My legs felt good. Where I was running was really pretty and I was sad I couldn't go further. I'll have to run there again on Sunday so I can see more.

PM- This afternoon we ran at GRIAK. It was a very big race. I tried to get out hard but didn't and got boxed in really bad but then it was a false start so it was ok. They didn't call the false start till about a minute into the race but at least I would have a second chance to get out better. The second start I got out much better. After the start I settled into a pace and pretty much stayed there. I think I need to work more on hills and my kick. My first mile was a 6:10 and my total time was 20:44. I finished in 110th and was at about the place throughout the whole race. After the race I was disappointed with my race because I think I could have pushed harder, so when we got back to the hotel I went for a run to calm down. I ran about 2 miles the first one was probably faster than what I ran in the race.

This morning I went for a run with my dad and Susannah. We ran on a trail by the hotel. We ran out just over two miles and then back. I was supposed to hit 6:25, 6:20, 6:15, and 6:10. I ran a 6:26, 6:20, 6:14, and a 6:01. We jogged 2 laps in between each mile for recovery. The first two felt good and were pretty easy. The third one was definetly the hardest. After that one I wanted to quit, and thought there was no way I would be able to hit a 6:10, but Emily told me to just stay positive and pretend like it was the end of a race. I did and was able to hit a 6:01. It felt pretty easy and I think I maybe could have went faster on the other ones. For a cooldown we jogged up to sunnyside park. We did a lap around and then back which was a mile and a half. I didn't take any ibuprophen before the workout and my leg didn't hurt too bad. I took some this morning but it probably had worn off by the workout. I'm going to try to cut back on the ibuprophen and see if I can be completely off of it by next week.

Today we had a meet against highland, west and granger. Highland and West are probably the most competitive schools in the region so it was a good way to see where we are at. We jogged half of the course for the warm-up. Then we did some strides and started the race. The race went really well. I started out good but I was a few steps back from the first place girl. I should have closed the gap and stayed closer to her, but I didn't so she kept putting more and more distance on me. I ended up second and ran a 19:08. It was supposed to be an accurate 5k measured with a wheel, but I'm not convinced. That's a really big improvement from last week so I'm guessing it was a little short. After the race we jogged about a mile. It was a good meet and the girls team won. Hopefully this is an indicator for region. I think our legs are tired especially from monday's workout so on fresh legs I think I can run much better.

The race went ok. It was really muddy and wet on the course and rained throughout the whole race. By the end of the race I was covered in mud. It was kind of cold outside and I had troubles getting a good warm-up. I didn't get a good start probably due to the lack of warm up. When the course bottlenecked I was boxed in and practically had to walk. Once we got to the road I was able to move a little better. I just worked on passing people the whole race. I think I probably passed over 50 people throughout the race. My time wasn't great, and there were a lot of girls that beat me that shouldn't have. I was 4th from 4a but there weren't very many 4a schools there.

PM- Tonight my shin wasn't hurting as much I wanted to do the workout I missed in the morning but my dad wanted me to do the workout with the team. We ran up to sunnyside park did 1 lap around, then 8 strides and 1 longer repeat. Then we did one lap around the park and ran back to the school. Once we got to the school I still wanted to do this mornings workout so I started it and did 2 laps slow and then 2 laps speed changes but my shin still hurt and I wouldn't have been able to hit the times I needed to so I stopped. It's frustrating not being able to do important workouts. State is only 2 and a half weeks away so I just need to tough it out for that long. I just wish it would stop hurting it's been hurting for 16 weeks and I'm doing everything I can to help it heal while still running. Today we had our last hard workout of the season. We were doing 20x200 jogging a 200 in between. We did 2 laps slown and then 4 laps of speed changes for a warm-up. My 200's were all between 32 and 38. They felt good even though it was cold outside. It's somewhat frustrating my fastest 200 ever is a 32 but I've never been able to go faster and I don't know why. Maybe that's as fast as I'll ever be in a 200 but it's frustrating because if I'm running with fresh legs I can throw a 32 and not be tired but still can't go faster.

Today we did 1 mile warm-up, then one mile of speed changes. Then we did 3x400. I ran a 1:13, a 1:15, and a 1:22. On the last one I was tired and totally gave up. Then we jogged a mile cooldown. The workout felt good and I think I'll have a good region on Wednesday.

AM- Did an easy shake out run this morning. Just to the golf course and back I threw in a few strides to loosen up my legs.

PM- We had region today. I felt great! I did some jogging for a warm-up and some strides. Then we ran the race. I felt like I did ok in the race but I didn't run the best race I could have. I ended up fourth. My time was a minute faster than last year so that was really good. I need to be more aggresive in my races and I need to want to hurt because I've just been running and not really racing. What do you guys do to encourage yourselves?

This morning we went for a nice easy 10 miler. Me and Susannah ran together. We started at Liberty Park and ran to the gate at the mouth of City creek canyon and back. I hadn't eaten anything before the run so i was really looking forward to taking my Gu at the half way. You know your hungry when you want to take a Gu! The run felt good. It took 1:20:37 so just over 8 minute pace. It was sort of cold out but it warmed up and was perfect for running.

This morning we met at Liberty park for practice. We did one lap for a warm-up. Then we did some fartlek. We did 10x1 minute on and off. We did loops around the pond so we could get a few hills. Then we jogged one lap cooldown. I felt like I had a good workout and pushed myself. My right quad was hurting a bit and I'm not sure why. Hopefully it was just a one time thing.

Tonight I went for a run at Sugarhouse park but it was dark and scary so after 2 laps I ran along 1300 e. It ended up being just over 5 miles. It felt good and there were a few spots I was able to hit a pretty decent pace.

I ran from my house to my Grandma's. It was 5.5 miles. I felt like a 90 year old woman attempting to run. I was stiff and sore and didn't warm-up. I intended on running to Sugar house park which is another mile but stopped at her house instead. It was slow but it felt good to get a run in.

Tonight we did a Halloween Fun Run in American Fork. Me and my Dad warmed up for about a mile. My shins were hurting really bad. Then we ran the race. I didn't start as fast as I wanted to because my shins were hurting but they warmed up and didn't bother me too much after that. My legs started to get tired about 2 miles in. It was an ok race.

I currently can't run because of my shins. They have been hurting really bad and I haven't been able to run on them, so instead I've been cross training which is not my favorite thing to do so hopefully I will be running again soon!

I attempted to do a little bit of running today but it was still pretty painful. I used the spin bike for 10 minutes then I ran for 5 minutes. I did that twice my shin still hurt really bad. I have region in Albuquerque on Saturday. I know I can suck it up and ignore the pain for the race but I just wish it would get better and I could run consistently

I warmed up on the bike for 20 minutes then I ran 1 mile. My shin hurt but I was able to run on it. The more I raised the incline on the treadmill the less it hurt so I had it inclined to 4% Then I biked for 20 more minutes and ran another mile. then I lifted weights for just over an hour. After that I biked for 10 more minutes and then did some stretching

Today I warmed up on the bike for 20 minutes and then I ran 2 miles. It took me 17:15. My shin still hurt but wasn't as bad as yesterday which is encouraging. After the run I did a few weights and stretched for a while. My shins are hurting less and less each day hopefully they will be completely better soon. I have region this weekend and I hope I can qualify for nationals.

Today was region in Albuquerque, NM. My race wasn't till 1 so around 9 I went for a short shake out run. I just ran around the block by our hotel a few times. It was probably just over a half mile it took me 5 minutes. Later when I warmed up for the race I ran out on the course a little ways and then back. The course was more of a trail sort of like Jordan River Trail, so I wasn't sure what kind of shoes to wear. We asked some of our friends from NM and they said that most people wear flats so I went with flats. Before the race I only had time to do 1 stride. The stride really made my shin hurt which made me pretty nervous but I just tried to ignore it. The race started and I got a good start. There was a pack of about 15 or more girls a little bit ahead of me about a 400 into the race so I moved up to the pack and then started to move through it. I kept moving till about a mile into the race and then I settled into a pace and stayed there the rest of the race. I ended up being 12th and my time was 20:59. I was happy with the race, and I'm glad I qualified for nationals. I could definetely tell that my fitness isn't as good as it was a few weeks ago and I think once I can get my fitness back up I can bring my tiems back down. After the race I did a short cooldown with Danielle. My shins felt pretty good they still hurt though but I don't think I made them worse by running.

I am sore from the race yesterday which just goes to show how out of shape I am... 20 minutes warm-up on the bike, then I tried to run but my shin hurt too much and I couldn't run without limping so I decided not to do any running today, but I did do 20 minutes on the elliptical and then 20 more minutes on the bike. After that I did some stretching and a bit of weights and core work. Hopefully my shin will be feeling good enough to do a little bit of running tomorrow.

Today I biked 15 minutes. Then I ran a mile on the treadmill. Then I did the elliptical for 15 minutes. Then I went for a run outside. It took me 13 minutes and was about a mile and a half. My shin stopped hurting after about 10 minutes of running so maybe I haven't been running long enough to warm my shin up. After the run I stretched and did an hour of weights.

Have you been to a doctor...you want to make sure you don't have a stress fracture. Does it hurt on the inside or outside of your shin?
