Personal:

I did lots of competitive running growing up. I'm now 23 and have fibromyalgia and CFS. I just finished nursing school and am going back for my MSN in a few months, but I want to get back in shape and be able to run again.

Today I did a test run to sort of give me an idea of how much fitness i've lost. Turns out i've lost ALOT!! I guess that's what happens when your put on bed rest for a couple of months...any way I went to the gym to run 1 mile. At least I finished, I was counting down the minutes. It took me 9:55, the competitive nature in me made me push the last tenth so I could break 10 minutes, haha. When I finished I took my heart rate and it was 192. I know that is alot higher than it should be especially since my "max" heart rate is suposidly 204. So just wondering, is my heart rate that high because I'm still recovering from mono or because I'm really out of shape? After the run I intended on doing a little bit of core work but was too sick and tired from running to do any. I really need to do something though because I've lost alot of muscle. I would like to try to do 1 mile each day till I can do that comfortably and then try 2 or 3 and see how that goes. Do you think it is too soon to start running again? It's been 6 weeks since I was diagnose with mono and 1 1/2 weeks since I had my tonsils out. If it's not to soon to start running again should I run slower to keep my heart rate lower? Just wondering, any thoughts are appreciated. Thanks

I ran on the treadmill again today. Today was a much better experience then yesterday. I stretched about 10 minutes beforehand just like yesterday and then started running. I put the treadmill on 1.5 incline and started slower then yesterday and then increased the speed every minute. It took me 10:33 to finish the mile but it felt very easy and went by quickly. My heart rate at the end was 161 so much better than 192 yesterday. After the run I stretched for about 10 more minutes and then did 25 crunches and 5 push-ups ( I have REALLY weak arms but I have to start somewhere I guess). Now I'm just wondering what I should do from here. I'm going to do at least one more day of only a mile and hopefully a bit faster than today but I'm not sure if I should keep doing the mile till I'm able to do it at 8:00 comfortably or if I should add a mile and stay at a slower pace.

Hi Breanna, I am glad you are feeling better. What I can remember about when I was getting back after 4 months off was:

20' off 30' 20' off 30' off

I will try to find my training schedule and send them to you through the blog. I would not worry about pace right now. Build up some mileage and the speed will come.

Today I did a little bit of a warm up in the school and then a little bit more outside. Then I went back inside and did strides. I did 2x8 strides. They felt good. I like being able to run and get my heart rate back up, that's the hardest part of not running. We also did a few weights. My legs are very sore but that is just because I am out of shape. It's all good soreness no aches or pains that are worrisome so that is encouraging. Tomorrow I'll do some pool running and hopefully I can be back in shape in no time. I just have to remember to be patient so I don't hurt myself.

Today I went for a run from my house. This is the furthest I've went at once since I've started doing things again. It was only 1.6 miles and it took me 16:57. I ran from my house to the golf course and then did a short loop at the golf course and headed back. The golf course was still covered in snow so most of the run was done through the snow which probably slowed me down a bit but that's ok because it's just good that I'm out doing anything. I'll do a little bit of core work later today.

Today I did a lap around the school for a warm-up which is about half a mile and then I did some strides in the hall at the school I did 8 of them. 4 of them I gradually increased the speed. Then for a cooldown I did another lap around the school. Then I went in the weight room and did a little bit of upper body stuff. I'm getting less and less tired every time I workout so maybe I can start doing a little bit more.

Today I ran just over 2 miles in phoenix. The weather was so nice and a great break from salt lake. I ran at about 9:10 pace and it felt good. This is the longest run I have done so far, and I feel like I'm starting to be able to handle more.

Today we ran up to the track. We did 2 sections starting down in the parking lot and running up to the track. We were supposed to push a few different sections each time. Both times took me about 2 minutes. Then we went back down to the school and did some stuff in the weight room. The running felt good but I'm still so out of shape that its just hard cardiovascularly and not too bad on my legs. Hopefully my heart will catch up with my legs soon.

Today we had a track meet, and I hadn't planned on running but when I woke up in the morning I really wanted to so I did. I ran the two mile. I didn't do much of a warm-up since I don't have much of a base under me. Then we ran the race. I just tried to stay consistent because I wasn't sure how my body would handle the race and if I'd even be able to finish. The first 3 laps felt fine and then the rest hurt. I didn't really race it I guess I more just ran it. Next time I'll have to race now that I know I can do it. My time was 13:13 which is good and bad. Good considering how bad of shape I'm in but bad because I've ran that exact time to the second in the two mile at least 5 times before. Next meet I run in I'll hopefully do the 1600 or the 800 but it will just depend on how my training goes.

Today I ran 3 miles by my school. I ran south on 1300 e till 1700 s. Then dropped down 1700 s. to 1100 e. Then back to my school. It felt good. It took me about 26 minutes so under 9 minute pace and it didn't feel too hard so hopefully my fitness is coming back. I'm a little sore but that will go away. Other than that I'm pain free. It's so nice to be able to run without pain it's been almost a year since I've been able to do that.

I went for a run around the hotel. This was the longest run I've done without stopping since I started back. It was tough and I really wanted to stop but I just made myself keep pushing because that's the only way I'm going to get back. It took me about 37 minutes so it was slow but I think that's about as fast as I can go right now.

Today I ran from the Capital to Sugar House park. It was a really fun run. I felt good at the end and wanted to keep going but decided to stop while I was feeling good instead of running till I felt like dying and then stopping. My shin hurt a little bit on the down hills at the start of the run but by the end it wasnt bugging me anymore. That could be because it warmed up or the ibuprofen kicked in. This is the furthest run I've done since I started to run again. I'd like to get 30 to 35 miles this week, so hopefully I'll be able to do that.

Today we did a 2.5 mile warm up a mile of which was speed changes. Then we did 4x200. I did all of mine in 38. We jogged a 200 in between. Then we did 2x400. I ran a 1:24 then a 1:22. We had a 200 recovery in between. Then we did a relay and where we did 4 more 200's but I dont know what my times were for those. Then we did a mile cooldown. I was happy with the workout it felt good and i was glad I pushed myself through the whole thing.

PM- Jogged 3 laps to warm-up. Then I did 2 laps of speed changes and 1 lap slow. Then I did a mile. I was supposed to try and run it in 6:00, but it was really windy outside so it was more of a tempo mile. I ran it in 6:27. Then I did 2x800. I ran the first one in 3:01, and the second one in 3:02. Then I did 5x200. All of them were either 36 or 37 but the last one was 33. Then I jogged a little over a lap for a cooldown.

This afternoon I went for a run, but I had eaten too close to the run so I only went 2 miles and decided to finish the rest later. I did the first 2 at Sugarhouse park and it took me 17:00. Then at night I went for 4 more miles. It took me 33:12 so 8:18 pace. It felt good and I was able to open up my stride. That's the fastest I've went in a while. My shin hurt but I took ibuprofen which helped and once I opened up my stride it seemed to hurt less also. I have a doctor appointment monday so we'll see what he says about them for that.

I talked to someone in sport medecine who used to live in my neighborhood and she gave me some tips on how to heal/avoid shin splints. I should show you sometime because it helps a lot.

Breanna!!! You can not run on a stress fracture, so you need to get a second opinion. You have to take time off until it heals and then start back slowly, but if a doctor is telling you that you can run every other day, you need to get another doctor!!!! Please, as we are all anxious for you to get healthy. Maybe pool running, but that would be based on the stress fracture...get a second opinion!!

6 miles up on pipeline trail it was an awesome run. When I started the weather was perfect. It looked like it was going to rain but it had looked like that all day so I didn't think it was going to. About two miles in it started to rain a little but not too bad. By the time i got to the turn around it was pouring and continued to pour the rest of the run. On the way back I threw in some strides. I did about 5 or 6 of them, a minute or more each. My shin hurt a little but more towards the beginning. It seems like the calf muscle hurts more than the actual tibia but I'm not sure.

I ran 6 miles today on a trail. The trail was really rocky so it was hard to run fast because we had to be careful not to fall. It took us 57:24, so 9:34 pace. I ran with the team from the school to sugar house park, then around the park and back. I added in the parking lot to make it six. It took me 44:30, so 7:25 pace. I pushed pretty hard and my legs hurt after, but they don't feel too bad today.

Today was the first day of school, and we went for a nice easy run. The run was 3 miles but we stopped  at a park during the run and did 5 strides. My shins hurt but I think if I ice them they will be okay.

We did our workout today in 90 plus degree weather. We jogged one mile warm-up on the track, then did 3 laps of speed changes and 1 lap slow. Then we did 2x1 mile with 5 minutes recovery. My first mile was 6:21 and my second was 6:25. Then we did a mile cooldown. I didn't go into this workout with quite the right mind set. My times weren't awful but I know I could have went faster if I would have focused on staying up with the lead pack more. Our first meet is next week and I'm a little bit nervous because I still don't know where I'm at, and we have a new region so I don't know anyone who will be in the race really. But I'm still excited, and I think I can do well as long as I stay mentally focused.

I did a little over a half mile warm-up. Then I did a 3 mile tempo run in 20:25. Then I did about a half mile cool down. My shin hurt in the warm-up and cool down but I didn't notice it much during the tempo run. I'm encouraged by my tempo run because it sort of gives me a better feel for where I'm at racing wise. Today was our first race. I was really nervous for the race because I haven't raced in a while and I didn't know where I was fitness wise. The race was on our region course which is probably the toughest course we race other than state. It was pre-region so all the schools from our region was there. I went out pretty hard with the lead girls.  By the first mile I was in the lead. I felt pretty good. Then I just held on from there and I ended up winning the race! I ran  20:00. The course was 2.93. I still need to build my base up a bit more, and I really need to work on hills. I'm excited to see how the season goes, our next meet is BYU this weekend.

Today we had BYU. I did about a 2 mile warm up. Then we did some strides and started the race. The first mile went really well. I came through in 6:00 and was with the lead pack. From there I faded back. My time ended up being a 20:32. Overall the race wasn't too bad, but after I fell off of the lead pack I didn't fight. I need to fight more and not let myself slow down so much.

We warmed up just over a mile and did some strides. The start was late and everyone was held at the start line for about 15 minutes longer than we planned. It was really hot out. I started the race and tried to get into a rythm. I worked on moving up from person to person. I tried to push on the hills. I did well for about 2 miles and then my legs were really tired. Going into the race I was pretty sore so I think the hills in the course were more than they could take. I did well and gave a good effort. I think when my legs are fresh I'll be able to run alot faster. I was 21st over all and I think 8th in 4a so that was good. After the race we jogged a little over a mile cooldown.

This morning we had a race. This particular meet is divided up into 7 different races. I ran in the #1 varsity race. There were 23 girls in my race. It was the same course as our region course which we ran 2 weeks earlier. I ran 11 seconds slower today, and I was 13th in my race. I felt like I ran an okay race but I kind of was just going through the motions and not really racing. This seems to happen in alot of my races and I need to figure out what I need to do so that I can be more competitive. I warmed up about a mile and a half. It was really hot out so I tried to hydrate well. I think I warmed up too early but I was antsy so I had to do something. My legs were really sore today and just felt off, but I still should have pushed harder. In my next few races I really need to focus more on them and actually race them.

At night I went for a 7 mile run to get my mileage for the week. 50! Yay :)

We jogged a mile warm-up, then a mile of speed changes and 1 lap slow. Then we did 6x1000. I did the first 3 of them in 3:36, 3:39, and 3:41. On the 4th one my knee was hurting and I was tired and so I dropped out at the 400, which was a 1:27. Then my dad talked me into finishing the workout. I did the last 2 in 3:40 and 3:42. Then I had to hurry to the doctor, so I didn't have time for a cooldown. The hardest part of the workout was that it was really windy. I felt okay but I wish I would have done the fourth 1000 and not dropped out. I need to be tougher in my workouts and go into them with a better attitude.
