Personal:

I did lots of competitive running growing up. I'm now 23 and have fibromyalgia and CFS. I just finished nursing school and am going back for my MSN in a few months, but I want to get back in shape and be able to run again.

Today I did a test run to sort of give me an idea of how much fitness i've lost. Turns out i've lost ALOT!! I guess that's what happens when your put on bed rest for a couple of months...any way I went to the gym to run 1 mile. At least I finished, I was counting down the minutes. It took me 9:55, the competitive nature in me made me push the last tenth so I could break 10 minutes, haha. When I finished I took my heart rate and it was 192. I know that is alot higher than it should be especially since my "max" heart rate is suposidly 204. So just wondering, is my heart rate that high because I'm still recovering from mono or because I'm really out of shape? After the run I intended on doing a little bit of core work but was too sick and tired from running to do any. I really need to do something though because I've lost alot of muscle. I would like to try to do 1 mile each day till I can do that comfortably and then try 2 or 3 and see how that goes. Do you think it is too soon to start running again? It's been 6 weeks since I was diagnose with mono and 1 1/2 weeks since I had my tonsils out. If it's not to soon to start running again should I run slower to keep my heart rate lower? Just wondering, any thoughts are appreciated. Thanks

I ran on the treadmill again today. Today was a much better experience then yesterday. I stretched about 10 minutes beforehand just like yesterday and then started running. I put the treadmill on 1.5 incline and started slower then yesterday and then increased the speed every minute. It took me 10:33 to finish the mile but it felt very easy and went by quickly. My heart rate at the end was 161 so much better than 192 yesterday. After the run I stretched for about 10 more minutes and then did 25 crunches and 5 push-ups ( I have REALLY weak arms but I have to start somewhere I guess). Now I'm just wondering what I should do from here. I'm going to do at least one more day of only a mile and hopefully a bit faster than today but I'm not sure if I should keep doing the mile till I'm able to do it at 8:00 comfortably or if I should add a mile and stay at a slower pace.

Today I did a little bit of a warm up in the school and then a little bit more outside. Then I went back inside and did strides. I did 2x8 strides. They felt good. I like being able to run and get my heart rate back up, that's the hardest part of not running. We also did a few weights. My legs are very sore but that is just because I am out of shape. It's all good soreness no aches or pains that are worrisome so that is encouraging. Tomorrow I'll do some pool running and hopefully I can be back in shape in no time. I just have to remember to be patient so I don't hurt myself.

Today I went for a run from my house. This is the furthest I've went at once since I've started doing things again. It was only 1.6 miles and it took me 16:57. I ran from my house to the golf course and then did a short loop at the golf course and headed back. The golf course was still covered in snow so most of the run was done through the snow which probably slowed me down a bit but that's ok because it's just good that I'm out doing anything. I'll do a little bit of core work later today.

Today I did a lap around the school for a warm-up which is about half a mile and then I did some strides in the hall at the school I did 8 of them. 4 of them I gradually increased the speed. Then for a cooldown I did another lap around the school. Then I went in the weight room and did a little bit of upper body stuff. I'm getting less and less tired every time I workout so maybe I can start doing a little bit more.

Today I ran just over 2 miles in phoenix. The weather was so nice and a great break from salt lake. I ran at about 9:10 pace and it felt good. This is the longest run I have done so far, and I feel like I'm starting to be able to handle more.

Today I just went for a 15 minute run. It was probably a bit more than a mile and a half. It felt good. Afterwards I did some stuff in the weight room to work on core strength.

Today we ran up to the track. We did 2 sections starting down in the parking lot and running up to the track. We were supposed to push a few different sections each time. Both times took me about 2 minutes. Then we went back down to the school and did some stuff in the weight room. The running felt good but I'm still so out of shape that its just hard cardiovascularly and not too bad on my legs. Hopefully my heart will catch up with my legs soon.

Today we had a track meet, and I hadn't planned on running but when I woke up in the morning I really wanted to so I did. I ran the two mile. I didn't do much of a warm-up since I don't have much of a base under me. Then we ran the race. I just tried to stay consistent because I wasn't sure how my body would handle the race and if I'd even be able to finish. The first 3 laps felt fine and then the rest hurt. I didn't really race it I guess I more just ran it. Next time I'll have to race now that I know I can do it. My time was 13:13 which is good and bad. Good considering how bad of shape I'm in but bad because I've ran that exact time to the second in the two mile at least 5 times before. Next meet I run in I'll hopefully do the 1600 or the 800 but it will just depend on how my training goes.

Today I ran 3 miles by my school. I ran south on 1300 e till 1700 s. Then dropped down 1700 s. to 1100 e. Then back to my school. It felt good. It took me about 26 minutes so under 9 minute pace and it didn't feel too hard so hopefully my fitness is coming back. I'm a little sore but that will go away. Other than that I'm pain free. It's so nice to be able to run without pain it's been almost a year since I've been able to do that.

Ran down to Liberty park from the school and did a little bit more than a lap and ran back. For the first half of the park the group I was in was doing fireman. Then I switched to another group of kids that are just starting to run so we walked several parts.

Today we did some stuff in the weight room and then we went for a twenty minute run. we ran from the school north on 1300 e. to South Temple and back. It was about 2 miles and took just under 20 minutes. It felt good but I'm a little bit sore from lifting and the tumbling classes I've been doing.
